Discovery Store |
| |
The
Discovery Store carries "holiday ornaments." They indicated that
they did not want to offend those who don't celebrate Christmas
under their limited corporate mantra of diversity and
multiculturalism. What's more, they indicated that calling a
holiday ornament a Christmas ornament might create an
unwelcoming environment for those who don't celebrate Christmas.

Hecht's Store |
| |
Walk into
the "Holiday" section of this department store where you will
find the brand "Home for the Holidays" for most of the ornaments
and Christmas items. Most of the Christmas paraphernalia has
been branded with names such as "Holiday Lights" and "Holiday
Garland." The only hint you get from this section of the store
that shoppers are shopping for Christmas is derived from the
background Christmas music. |

The Architect of the
Capitol |
| |
Since 1963, Architect of the Capitol upon
recommendation from House Speaker John W. McCormack, started
displaying a holiday tree on the Capitol grounds. The lights on
the 2003 U.S. Capitol Holiday Tree will be lit during a ceremony
held on Thursday, December 11, at 5 p.m.
Take a peek at the
2003
Capitol Holiday Tree! Not only you will see this holiday
tree on the Capitol grounds, you will also be able to purchase
"2003 Capitol Holiday Tree Merchandise" from its web site. Their
communications' officer indicated that it is the "peoples tree"
and people should celebrate it how they see fit. A phone
conversation with the secretary to the Architect indicated it's
better to have a "holiday" tree as opposed to nothing at all.

Kensington, Maryland |

No Santa or Christmas lights
for the town of Kensington, Maryland under pressure from two
families in 2001! Mayor Lynn Raufaste explained that Santa
has been banned "because two families in our town felt that they
would be uncomfortable with Santa Claus being a part of our
event." So what about this year (2003)? Kensington
has invited Santa back to its annual event that used to be called
the Christmas tree lighting, but it is now called "light an evergreen
tree!"
